november 2024 zine pile!
Between the local Zine Harvest fair and the release of a hot! new! edition of yaoi zine, I was flush with new zines and art books last month. The post below spotlights the ones available for purchase or download, though I'll give a special shoutout to Cole Pauls' Tahltan-language ghost story comics. I couldn't find these specific works online, but his longform projects such as Dakwäkãda Warriors are very worth your time.
Suburbanatomy by Adi Hadzismajlovic – odd stories in an odder format: a narrow matryoshka doll with a texture reminiscent of a broadsheet newspaper. The inclusion of glitchy Google Maps screenshots reinforces the feeling of that one is playing an indie horror game in the form of a riso zine. Available via Moniker Press.
Death Spark #2, edited by Thomas Campbell – comix anthology I picked up from one of the contributors, Gil Goletski, whose art graces the cover and the spread above. As can be observed above, the contents are big, glossy, sprawling images, frequently unsettling and never dull. Available via Comics Blogger.
Nunca há Nada | There Is Never Nothing by Luciana Freire D’Anunciação – a tall and stately volume of poems in Portuguese and English. The natural landscapes of southwestern BC are juxtaposed with Brazilian immigrant experiences and tableaux from the life of a working artist. Available via Moniker Press.
Yaoi Zine 4, edited by tshirt – the "gatekept edition" of the Yaoi Zine project, limited in scope to "actual yaoi" (overtly M/M media from Japan.) Where the expansiveness of prior issues included a plurality of fujo experiences, the fourth volume's tighter scope allows the pieces within to speak to each other more immediately. Available for free download.
